Dasein Library
Reimagining Memory and Memorial via AI
October 1, 2023
Project Overview
The Dasein Library project harnesses AI and AR technologies to capture and preserve personal stories, creating enduring memorials that seamlessly blend technology with individual essence. This initiative reimagines how we remember and maintain connections with those who have passed.
Philosophical Foundation
"Being-towards-death is the anticipation of a potentiality-of-being of that entity whose kind of being is anticipation itself." - Martin Heidegger
This profound quote from Heidegger's seminal work "Being and Time" encapsulates the essence of our project.
The Dasein Library is not merely about creating digital memorials; it's an exploration of existence itself and how technology can bridge the gap between life and death, memory and reality.
Personal Insights
As the creator of this project, I believe that our approach to death and remembrance is due for a revolution. In our digital age, where our online presence often outlives our physical selves, we have an unprecedented opportunity to redefine the concept of legacy.
The Dasein Library aims to capture not just the facts of a person's life, but the essence of their being - their Dasein, as Heidegger would say. By using AI to analyze personal data and AR to create immersive experiences, we're not just preserving memories; we're creating living, interactive legacies that can evolve and respond, much like the individuals they represent did in life.
This project is more than a technological endeavor; it's a deeply human one. It's about confronting our mortality, celebrating our existence, and finding new ways to connect across the boundary of life and death. In doing so, we hope to bring comfort to the bereaved, insight to future generations, and a new perspective on what it means to truly live on.
Technical Stack
The project leverages a suite of advanced software tools:
- Design: Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator
- 3D and Animation: Unreal Engine, Blender, Rhino
- Interactive and Generative Art: Touchdesigner, Processing
Context and Background
Based in Germany, the project addresses:
- High costs of traditional burial practices
- Evolving customs surrounding death and remembrance
- Replacement of older graves due to space constraints
- Population aging and anticipated increase in mortality rates Our research covers the history of funerals in Europe, from Neanderthal burial customs to modern practices, providing a rich historical context for our innovative approach.
Through the Dasein Library, we aim to create a new paradigm for memorialization - one that is deeply rooted in philosophy, empowered by technology, and fundamentally human in its essence.
